Spring Clean Up

  • Cleanup, Mulching, Edging, Weeding and Hedge Trimming

At Seneca Gardens we start our Spring Cleanup in mid March and finish just before Easter. We first pull weeds and cut the edge of beds. Then we remove all of the old mulch and pulled weeds from the bed before mulching.
During Spring Cleanup the Mulch is never to be applied up against the trunks of trees or shrubs. Turning of the soil should be followed by a layer 3 to 4 inches of fine mulch. Spring mulch should last through out the Summer and be ready to be turned into the soil before Fall Mulch.
Hedges may be trimmed removing new growth to either maintain a current form or to slightly alter the form. Some hedges are allowed to keep a natural appearance while others are forced into formal shapes.
Allowing hedges to become over grown can also be a problem as removal of large portions can be detrimental to the plants health as well as the aesthetics. Some species we do not trim as they take many years to grow. Some Hedges must not be cut until may while others should only be pruned in Fall.
